Height: The Yorkshire Terrier is about 6-9 inches tall.
Weight: The Yorkshire Terrier weighs between 7 lbs. and under.
Colors: The Yorkshire Terrier can be dark steel blue from back of head to root of their tail. The face, chest and feet are bright tan.
General Appearance: The Yorkshire Terrier is a well-balanced, long-coated, small (Toy-type) terrier, readily identified by its straight-flowing body coat. The hair is parted on the muzzle and from the base of the skull to the end of the tail. The body is square and evenly proportioned. The dog's high head carriage and confident manner gives the appearance of vigor and self-importance.
Temperment: The Yorkshire Terrier is great with children but should be supervised due to it being a small dog. It could be injured easily. They are intelligent, confident, affectionate, lively, brave and spirited.

Although the coat is easy to care for it is time consuming and necessary in order to keep your dog in healthy condition. Yorkshire Terriers don't have an undercoat, so they don't shed as much as other long-haired dog breeds. This makes them a great breed for allergy sufferers. |
Health Concerns: The Yorkshire Terrier's health concerns include: Congenital Liver Shunts, Hypothyroidism, Hypoglycemia, Luxating Patellas, Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, Tracheal collapse, Lymphangiectasia, and Renal Displaysia. They are also susceptable to problems when put under anesthesia because of the tiny size of their lungs.
Training: The Yorkshire Terrier is easily trained for obedience and agility but may have a hard time with potty training (housebreaking).
Activity: The Yorkshire Terrier gets enough exercise playing indoors.
Life Span: The Yorkshire Terrier lives an average life of 12-15 years.
Litter Size: The Yorkshire Terrier has an average litter of 2-3 puppies.
Country of Origin: The Yorkshire Terrier originated in England.
Brief History: The Yorkshire Terrier was developed in northern England to catch rats that lived in mine shafts. It was also used as a hunting dog that could go into fox and badger burrows. The Yorkie became a fashionable pet in the late Victorian era in Yorkshire, England. It is said that they were bred from the Manchester Terrier, Skye Terrier, Maltese, Paisley and Clydesdale Terrier. Yorkshire Terriers made their appearance in the United States in the early 1870s and today have become one of the most popular toy breeds. The Yorkie was originally much bigger than it is now, but breeders selected the tiniest dogs to breed so that they could reduce the Yorkshire Terrier's size over time.
