| General Appearance: The Shih Tzu is a sturdy, lively, alert toy dog with long flowing double coat. Befitting his noble Chinese ancestry as a highly valued, prized companion and palace pet, the Shih Tzu is proud of bearing, has a distinctively arrogant carriage with head well up and tail curved over the back. Although there has always been considerable size variation, the Shih Tzu must be compact, solid, carrying good weight and substance. |
| Temperment: The Shih Tzu is a true companion. His happy, out-going and affectionate temperament coupled with his friendly and trusting nature make him a great house pet. He should be supervised around young children so that they do not harm him. |
| Care: The Shih Tzu needs for it's coat to be groomed at least 30 minutes a day. Should be bathed once a month and should have matting on feet clipped occasionally. |

| Brief History: The history of this little dog is clouded by time and folklore, but it is thought that the Shih Tzu originated in Tibet. It resembles the Tibetan Spaniel, Lhasa Apso and Pekingese, which also originated in this area of the world. The Shih Tzu were considered so valuable that they were often given as gifts to the Chinese Court. In the early 1930's, they were imported to England, and were brought to the United States about 1958. |
