| Brief History: The Afghan Hound has been mentioned in Egyptian papyruses and in caves in Afghanistan over 4000 years ago. This dog is an ancient breed of dog that was used as a shepherd and hunter for many centuries. It hunted deer, wild boars, goats and wolves. The Afghan Hound was perfect for these jobs because it is fast and agile. The Afghan Hound was discovered in the west on the regions of Afganistan in during the 19th century and later sent to England. The real start of the breed in the US started with the first Ghazni imports in 1931, when Zeppo Marx and his wife brought from England a female named Asra of Ghazni, and a male named Westmill Omar. Asra and Omar were later acquired by Q. A. Shaw McKeans Prides Hill kennels in Massachusetts. Mr. McKean soon added a young English champion, Badshah of Ainsdart. These three - Asra, Omar and Badshah - formed the cornerstone of the breed in America. |
